Two Portraits by Vaillat, 1845
SOLD October 2013 |
Framed French quarter plate daguerreotypes, probably showing a brother and sister, by E. Vaillat, Paris, circa 1845. Both images bearing the signature "Vaillat, Opticien, Palais Royal, 43 [Paris]" in their white reverse-painted glass covers. In addition, the image of girl bears a decorative stamped signature on the plate in lower right corner reading "Vaillat / 1845". Housed in similar if not identical veneered wooden frames, overall dimensions of frames about 8 x 6.5 inches (20x17 cm).
This 1845 example is the earliest version of Vaillat's year-marked signature stamp I have yet seen. Examples of the stamp usually found are more typically dated in the 1850s.
Image of girl has a couple thin scratches to right of sitter.
