Oversize half plate daguerreotype of a woman in picturesque French local costume, seated in front of painted backdrop with windmill. With hand-coloring applied to flesh, red dress, and gold highlights. Housed in original passe-partout mount with restored front glass and period black lacquered frame. Overall dimensions with frame 12 x 10 inches (31x26 cm).
Wonderful presentation of a woman in traditional headdress and clothing from a French coastal? region in which - if one is to judge by the backdrop - windmills can be seen turning atop picturesque hilltops. A flawless plate with light sprinkling of small mold spiders.
