Two Craftsmen
SOLD September 2006 |
Two quarter plate ambrotypes of leather workers using the tools of their trade, housed side-by-side in a double pressed-paper case with repaired spine and one broken hook.
Found together, this wonderful pair show two workers we might interpret as master and apprentice, both seated on work stools whose construction is itself of some interest. The first image is a brilliant cuttings-patent style image with a back plate of ruby glass. The second was produced with blacking reverse-painted onto the back of the emulsion, with some resultant crazing of the emulsion, most noticable in the dark areas at center.
