Impressive, larger-than half plate French daguerreotype after the painting "The Calmady Children" by Thomas Lawrence, ca. 1855. Housed as found in a faux tortise-shell passe-partout mount and antique plaster frame. Overall dimensions including frame 11.5 x 9.75 inches (29x25 cm).   ( Inventory# ib821 )

"The Calmady Children" was painted by Lawrence in 1823 and was one of the most beloved paintings of its era. Currently housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, it was reproduced in the form of engravings and was also used as the design for a thermoplastic daguerreotype case (Berg 1-104). The image on this plate does not appear to have been produced after an engraving. There is a thin white area visible along the bottom below image.

Front cover glass cover has some speckling, missing bits of frame have been retouched. The daguerreotype appears to have been cleaned but is in excellent condition, with a few inconsequential abrasions and some small spots. A dark vertical line along the child's knee appears to be an original plate defect.

This image is sure to be the highlight of any wall it hangs on.
