Bell-Ringers Come to Town
SOLD October 2008 |
CDV-format albumen print ca. 1865 showing a bell-ringer and musical troupe boisterously entering a city while numerous bystanders stand by and gawk. With reverse imprint for "Cadwallader Bros. Art Place 223 Jefferson Avenue, Detroit, Mich."
An amazing image capturing the arrival of traveling entertainment in a 19th-century town, probably Detroit. Advertising blankets slung over the festooned horses proclaim "BELL RINGERS TO NIGHT". Behind them rides an eagle-and-shield-emblazoned "OMNIBUS BAND WAGON" holding at least nine blaring brass instruments as well as a drum. Another, very large, drum appears to follow on the street behind.
Some scattered rubs on image, bend in upper left corner.
