Teeming Chinatown
SOLD April 2009 |
Albumen print showing a birds-eye view of a busy Chinatown street ca. 1880, by Isaiah Taber. Titled in the negative "B1177 Chinatown, S. F. , Cal. / Taber Photo., San Francisco." Mounted on period album page. Print size 7.5 x 9.5 inches (19x24 cm).
A superb shot into the very "heart" of Chinatown, apparently during a festival or procession. A strange tent-like object along with what appear to be performers can be seen in the street near the middle of the block. Windows and rooftops are clustered with numerous spectators in Chinese garb, some of them in very precarious positions. Near the middle of block a sign reads "714-1/2 Sun Kam Wah & Co... China & Japan Bazaar".
Print overall in excellent condition with dark tones, minor fading at edges, light surface wear.
