Larger-than quarter plate tintype of school girl, perhaps from a German immigrant family, holding a school book, ruler and pencil box tied together with strap, ca. 1891. Housed in fancy paper holder approx. 6.5 x 4 inches (17x10 cm) with elaborate imprint and advertising for Carl J. Hohenstein, 640 Broadway, cor. Gerry St. Brooklyn [NY]." Print size 5 x 3.5 inches (13x9 cm).
Tintype has some surface wear but generally in very good condition.
The ornate front of the tintype's holder reads:
"4 Tin types this size for 25 cents at / Copyright 1891 by / Carl. J. Hohenstein, 640 Broadway, cor. Gerry St. Brooklyn / 908 & 910 Fulton St., cor. Washington Av."
On the reverse this information is repeated, along with much more advertising copy:
