Cabinet-card sized albumen print of an elk, vintage print circa 1890 by the Western photographer William Henry Jackson. Titled in the negative at bottom edge "3601. Wapitii or Elk." Mounted on portion of period album page. Print size 6.5 x 4 inches (17x10 cm).
Jackson has posed this taxidermed elk's head, with its magnificent rack of horns, as if cautiously peering over a rock outcropping, a painted forest landscape in the distance behind it.
This image is identified as Jackson's work based on a matching negative in the Colorado Historical Society's William Henry Jackson Collection.
