Quarter plate daguerreotype of a husband and wife, by Southworth and Hawes, Boston, circa 1855. Presented behind a thick, oversized brass mat in an oversize case. Overall dimensions of case about 5-3/8 x 4-5/8 inches (13x12 cm). Visible area of image about 3.75 x 3 inches (9.5x7.5 cm).   ( Inventory# id573 )

This image displays the top of Southworth and Hawes signature chair behind the wife's head. The chair still retains a curved handle piece at top which I believe dates the image to 1855 or earlier.

The unusual over-wide mat and oversized case is also one of Southworth and Hawes well-known presentation methods, intended to allow for display of more image area through its wider mat opening as well as to enhance the overall effect through more impressive size and wider surround showcasing the image.

This plate appears to display some of the mixed soft-focus effect associated with Southworth and Hawes, perhaps a result of their "white chamber" technique. For example, the sitter's hands in this image are in sharp focus, and yet this sharp focus seems to be simultaneously softened, in a manner that calls to mind later pictorialism.

Plate has a few small abrasions. Image has been archivally (electrolytically) cleaned to reduce heavy tarnish. The original case is in very good condition, with leather-repaired spine.
