The Colors of Life
Extensively hand-colored, approx. 7 x 5 inch (17x17 cm) salt print showing a young lady in studio setting, by Charles Chambon, Bordeaux, France, circa 1860. With photographer's label on reverse of frame reading "Daguerreotype & Photographie / Charles / Photographe / 3, Rue Mautrec, 3 / Cette rue donne Place de la Comedie, au coin du Cafe du / Bordeaux." Housed in the original white passe-partout mount and black oval frame. Overall dimensions of frame approx. 15 x 13 inches (39x34 cm), visible area of image about 5.75 x 4.25 inches (14.5x11 cm). Price: $625. ( Inventory# id103 )
A beautiful example of the art of the hand-colored salt print, in excellent condition. Mat has some discoloration, aging cracks to frame.
Found in housings similar to those used for daguerreotypes, in my experience these French hand-painted salt prints are actually far rarer than period daguerreotypes, perhaps due to preservation issues.
