Quarter plate daguerreotype by Rufus P. Anson, with applied hand-coloring in flesh-tone and red. Housed in full case with separated spine, pad stamped "Anson / 589 Broadway / NY" and stamped "ANSON" on plate.
A hefty dose of brilliant color to the sitter (as well as to a few red flowers in the tablecloth) combined with Anson's superb plate quality. One thinks of the "sad clown", traditional subject of the modern painting on velvet. Some sort of enwrapping winter headgear has been placed on the table at right.
