Happy Mother and Baby
Quarter plate daguerreotype, anonymous American ca. 1850, study of a smiling mother holding her active child. Light tinting in blush to faces, in full case with damaged torn spine.
The rambunctious infant is firmly restrained by one arm and a head, which is nestled against mother's breast. However mother has only two hands so the other arm has been able to escape and flutters in the air. Back half of case is slightly "sprung."
