Sixth plate daguerreotype of gent holding an unusual brass instrument, anonymous American ca. 1855, housed in full case with leather-repaired spine and brass mat impressed "VAN LOAN". With light applied tinting in red.   ( Inventory# ia720 )

I assume this plate is the work of Samuel Van Loan of the Philadelphia area. It gives a crisp rendering of the instrument in question, which someone has suggested might be a "cornopean" and predecessor of the cornet.
