Sixth plate daguerreotype of a woman seated in front of a very elaborately painted backdrop, anonymous American, 1840s. Housed in a full leather case with split spine and purple silk pad.   ( Inventory# ib190 )

Here the paint is in the daguerreotype rather than on it, in the form of a whole studio tableau including column, idyllic countryside, and rising sunbeams. In her hand she holds an open image case, which on close inspection may contain a daguerreotype of two women.
