The Quirky Sisters
SOLD September 2006 |
Quarter plate daguerreotype of two sisters, anonymous American ca. 1845. With a cut-paper mat which may be original to the image. Housed in a 1840s-style brown leather case with exterior wear and stains, professionally repaired hinge.
A wonderful, crisp early daguerreotype of two sisters clothed in identical dresses, down to the leaf-design fabric they are cut from. Each clasps a similar small hymn? book while their free hands are clasped together. Housed as found in a period hand-cut paper mat. Although one would normally assume no studios would use such a mat, nothing indicates that it is not original to the piece. The plate has some scattered flaws, mainly in the upper left corner. During resealing it was found to bear an "L.B. BINSSE & CO N.Y. / 40" plate mark.
