Quarter plate Japanese ambrotype of two men, perhaps Samurai, with swords in practice combat. Housed in period kiriwood case with missing (sliding) lid, dimensions including case 4.75 x 3.5 inches (12x9 cm).   ( Inventory# ib452 )

An excellent and detailed plate. Some fibers and stains in emulsion on reverse side of the glass plate. If these men are indeed Samurai the plate should date to circa. 1870. The hair of both men is pulled back and the leftmost man does look as if he might have a topknot.
