Large hand-colored salt print of two women with very thin waists posed arm-in-arm in front of an elaborate painted-in background. German ca. 1860. With a gilt mat, housed in a large black paper-mache frame. Visible area of image 8.5 x 6.75 inches oval (22x17 cm). Dimensions of frame 15 x 13.5 inches (38x34 cm)
The painted-in backdrop of this image seem to include a meandering river (the Rhine?) and a castle or fortress-like structure. Backing board bears a label with an inscription in old German script.
Condition: Colors excellent, underlying salt print appears to remain rich and dark in color. Two small fade spots in sky have been retouched. Light water stain on mat at bottom. Backing board detached from frame.
