Skylight Gallery 35
March 2013

Approximately quarter plate sized Japanese ambrotype in horizontal format showing a group of five people, apparently workers from a shop with name Hashimoto, circa 1895. In full kiriwood case with ink inscriptions on lid front, interior, and back of case. Dimensions of case 3.75 x 5 inches (9.5x13 cm).   ( Inventory# ic840g )

The inscriptions give a date of January 3rd, 1894 or 1895, "inside Higashi Gion-sha photo studio" and names of the sitters, "Chiyo, Iwakichi, Kuichiro, Jyojiro, Kamekichi." Chiyo Hashimoto, the little girl standing second from right, is probably the daughter of the Hashimoto shop's owner.

Some "frosting" at a few points in image.
