CDV-format albumen print of a Martinique notable, by Alophe (Adolphe Menut), sucessor to Gustav Le Gray, Paris Imprinted on reverse "Anc. Mon. G. Le Gray & Cie. / Photographe de S. M. L'Empereur / Alophe Succr. / 35, Boulevt. des Capucines / Paris" and inscribed in ink "Juliette 21 Septembre 1862."   ( Inventory# ic946b )

This card was found identified as "Juliette de la Martinique," probably a Martinique political or other notable who visited France.

Martinique, the Caribbean island which is still an overseas "Department" of France today, had an economy largely dependent on slave labor and experienced several rebellions before slavery was finally eliminated early in the 19th century.
