Overpainted albumen or coated salt print of a naval officer in green uniform, by L. Rubino, Marseille, circa 1860s. Hinged behind oval board mount as found dimensions of mount 12 x 10 inches (31x25 cm). With original backing board in the same dimensions bearing the studio label for "Photographie L. Rubino / Rue Cannebiere, No. 23 / Marseille / Portraits de toute dimension / Colories a l'aquarelle et a l'huile / Cartes de Visite..." [,,,Portraits of any size / Colored with watercolors or oils...]. Print size 8.5 x 6.25 inches (22x16 cm).
In still-bright colors this image depicts not only our sitter's uniform, but what appear to be ships in harbor visible beyond the in-painted columns and balustrade at left.
The underlying print, still visible in areas outside the overpainting, has a glossy surface.
