Dague Florentine


Vintage albumen print, study of a Florentine dagger and sheath by Pierre-Ambroise Richebourg ca. 1859. On mount titled "Arsenal de Tsarskoé-Sélo / Dague Florentine / Pl. 14. / Richebourg photogr. / Gide, éditeur. Paris." Dimensions of mount about 13.5 x 17.75 inches (35x45 cm). The arms of pre-industrial ages were labor-intensive not only in their execution, but even in the materials which composed them, as raw steel itself was a hand-crafted product involving trade secrets and highly skilled artisans.

Richebourg began his career as a noted daguerreotypist. He received his earliest instruction in photography directly from Daguerre and was also associated with the pioneer Vincent Chevalier.

Richebourg's photographs of Russian art, including this rare image, were published in Paris 1859-61 "under the patronage of His Majesty Emperor [Tsar] Alexander II," and dedicated to the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna.
