Lot 26. From Argentina
In addition to reverse painting and gilt, the passe-partout mount of piece incorporates tiny gemlike metal ornaments into its design.
Although unsigned, several factors beyond its discovery in Argentina point to this piece being an original production to the region. The elaborate passe-partout mount and period frame were typical of European particularly French plates, but also used in Central and South America, whereas the plate preparation (all four plate edges bent forward) was more seen in the Americas (for example in the images of Thomas Easterly) than in Europe.
