Spanish Lady
SOLD August 2000 |
Quarter plate ambrotype of a woman circa 1850s.
This appealing image of a beautiful woman was originally sealed with a fragment of Spanish-language newspaper attached to the black backing. My informant was inclined to place the newspaper in Spain rather than South America, and since the image was found in Europe it is possible that this is a rare example of a Spanish cased image. The newspaper mentions Spanish political matters as well as two political figures whose names might aid in further research.
Image uses accomplished soft focus, and two glints of light are made to gleam forth from the sitter's dark eyes. Light tinting to cheek. Housed as found in mat and protector but uncased, protector has broken through on one corner.
