Half plate ambrotype of three children ca. 1850s. Housed in original european-style passe-partout mount with replacement front glass, studio label for a Rio de Janeiro studio on reverse, overall dimensions of mount 6.7 x 5.5 inches (17x14 cm).   ( Inventory# gc10 )

An uncommon and accomplished image from tropical South America. The ornate label on reverse of image includes lush plant forms as well as a great deal of photographic apparatus. My informant was unable to gloss all of the Portugese, but there are obvious references to a "new system" and to the addition of hand-coloring.

Label reads "Rue D'Ajuda No. 9 / Ambrotypo / Novo Sistema / Tirao-se retatos em fumo e coloridos e Photographia / Rio de Janeiro".
