Quarter plate Fizeau-process daguerreotype etched for printing, by Louis Armand Hippolyte Fizeau, early 1840s.
Fizeau was a noted pioneer not only for his daguerreotype gilding process but also for the experiments in the early 1840s for producing printing plates from specially etched daguerreotypes. A quantity of his experimental plates survived as loose (unhoused) plates.
This quarter-plate image was given a mild electrolytic cleaning and is secured in a modern archival housing.
