Portrait with Grandma
SOLD November 2004 |
Sixth plate daguerreotype, anonymous American, 1840s, showing a young woman posed by an open daguerreotype with portrait of an elderly woman. Housed in full 1840s-style leather case. With applied tinting.
Pink coloring has been applied to the woman's dress, to her hands and face, and her eyes have been tinted blue. This moving and direct portrait of a woman's affection is in excellent condition, with the exception of some spotting from glass debris in the area to left of her head. The daguerreotype of Granny which rests at her elbow is crisply rendered.
Formerly in the Uwe Scheid collection, this daguerreotype was reproduced in Dewitz and Matz, "Silber und Salz" (1989) p. 520.
