Ruins of the Abbey
SOLD September 2006 |
4 x 5 inch (10x12 cm) English ambrotype of idyllic medieval ruins ca. 1858. Resealed in a period English white plaster passe-partout, as found. Overall dimensions with mount 5.75 x 7 inches (15x18 cm).
An amazing ambrotype reminiscent of period salt prints. A top-hatted gentleman is visible seated below the open arch left of center, giving a sense of scale. Some areas of cloudiness in the emulsion, in keeping with this images wistful character. The plate derives from the collection of Charles Clooney, dispersed after his death in London.
