Whistler's Granny
SOLD May 2002 |
Sixth plate daguerreotype ca. 1846, showing a period naive painting with odd resemblance to Whistler's "Portrait of Mother". Light applied tinting in red. In full period case with torn front pad and partially torn spine, dated "1846" on front pad.
The profile view in this image may have been adopted as putting less strain on the artist's abilities. Another naive aspect is the lack of classical perspective and its imitation via objects drawn at wildly different scales from one another. However, it is a heartfelt effort, probably by a family member, and it was treasured enough to have been daguerreotyped.
