Four Odd People
SOLD May 2002 |
French sixth plate oval daguerreotype of a group of four ca. 1850, in period black painted-metal and brass hanging frame.
This somewhat jarring out-take looks more like preparation than a finished image. Even with that proviso, however, we seem to be dealing with an eccentric group of people. A woman at right crouches down, twists her head sideways and glowers over the bonnet of her aged parent. The gent in center seems to be in some sort of motion. The woman at left has moved her hands up-and-down leaving two images on the plate. Only the woman seated at right appears to "play it straight" and she looks worn out from the effort.
