Under the Gazebo
SOLD September 2001 |
Quarter plate European-style daguerreotype of a mother and daughter outdoors under a gazebo, taken May 1852. Resealed, in original passe-partout mount and black lacquer wooden frame.
Crisp intriguing image of mother and daughter outdoors under a sky solarized to bright blue. The mount has a very attractive faux tortoiseshell glass front.
A variant of this daguerreotype appears as image 73 in John Wood's "The Daguerreotype" (1989). From what appears to be spanish moss hanging in the trees Wood conjectures it might be a New Orleans image, and notes the presence in New Orleans of French-born photographers who maintained contact with France. The present image bears a French-language inscribed date on what appears to be the original backing board, "Mai 1852".
