French half plate daguerreotype of lawyer ca. 1855. Housed in original plaster-gilt passe-partout mount. Overall dimensions of mount 8.25 x 6.75 inches (21x17 cm).
Even in the 19th century, hardworking tradesmen of the law were subject to caricature and critique, as seen in period illustrations by Daumier. Obviously a successful practitioner of his craft, this gent has been immortalized in his official garb on a large bright plate which remains in outstanding condition.
