Sixth plate English ambrotype, 1870s, showing a family gathered in front of a building with signage for "Bay Horse [Pub] / Sarah A. Hardcastle Licensed Brewer Retailer of Foreign & British Spirits Ale Porter Wines & Tobacco". Housed in English-style black paper half case.   ( Inventory# ia294 )

The small group in front of this pub consists of a brood of children and an older, matronly woman, but no corresponding male head of the family is present, leading us to suppose that Sarah's Pub supported her family in the absence of a male breadwinner.
