The Word of God
SOLD March 2004 |
Paired sixth plate daguerreotypes of a husband holding a bible and his wife holding a tall hymn (?) book, anonymous American ca. 1850. Housed in full case with split spine.
This aged gent makes an insistent pointing gesture towards a huge book, which we can assume to be the family bible, while simultaneously clasping it to chest with a wrinkled hand which is rendered in sharp focus. There can be little doubt of his confidence in the comforts of his faith as revealed by the literal word of God. His wife, in her own image, holds a lighter volume which from its shape we might take to be a hymnal. Her hands, too, are rendered in strong focus.
Housed in a damaged case with split spine. There is a "ding" in the plate of woman, in the upper left towards edge.
