CDV-format albumen print of a Araucanian woman ca. 1870, by E[milio] Garreaud y Cia., Santiago - Valparaiso [Chile]".
Good tones, albeit with white speckling in the negative. With the photographer's imprint beneath the image and on the reverse. Inscribed on the reverse in pencil "Araucana".
The Araucanos are a native Chilean people who had remained independent of the Incas and later resisted Spanish rule. Today they constitute only a small fraction of Chile's population.
