Early Post Mortem
SOLD November 2004 |
Sixth plate post-mortem daguerreotype, anonymous American ca. 1843, showing a mother holding a deceased child or relative. Early acorn-design pressed brass mat, in a plain-leather case with uneven hand checkering.
Light pink coloring has been applied to the mourner's face and hand (not to the deceased). The plate bears a Scoville's platemark. Resealed with modern glass. Case is in excellent condition with some wear by hook and a crack in external leather on hinge.
