Snuggled Down in the Corner
SOLD March 2005 |
Quarter plate unvarnished tintype ("melainotype") ca. 1860 in original period mat and case, showing a mother and infant in cheek-to-cheek pose.
A very quirky, lifelike composition. Mama needs to squeeze in her quality time as best she can!
This is a period cased tintype in its original case (indeed, as an unvarnished tintype it could not very easily survive outside of a case). It is not one of those modern confections of uncased tintype stuffed into an unrelated daguerreotype case, which seem to have become so prevalent nowadays. There is some dirt on the black areas of image, more so near edges, and a few stains in emulsion. Pressed paper case has discoloration and a split spine.
