The Sailors Homecoming

Quarter plate English ambrotype of a family with two sailors and a small, furry dog. Housed in an English style black paper half case with some wear.
Some vertical and horizontal striations appear to be in the emulsion. On the reverse of case, written in black ink upon black paper, is an inscription which I cannot fully make out, which appears to be six names followed by the date "1896".
