Fancy Child by Gouin
SOLD September 2006 |
French quarter plate daguerreotype of a child, early 1850s by the studio of Alexis Louis Charles Gouin, with applied hand-coloring in flesh tone, red, green and gilt. Housed in the original black lacquered oval wood frame with bubble glass and Gouin studio label on reverse. Overall dimensions of frame 5.75 x 4.75 inches (15x12 cm).
Alexis Gouin was a classically trained painter who went on to produce daguerreotypes and become one of the most noted daguerreian colorists.
In her French Daguerreotypes (1989) Janet Buerger notes that after his death in 1855, Gouin's wife and daughter carried on operation of his studio under the Gouin name, so that this piece may well be their work.
