Colorful Child by Claudet
SOLD March 2007 |
English sixth plate daguerreotype of a child in chair, with extensive hand-coloring, attributed to Antoine Claudet, ca. 1855. Housed in a full English-style red leather case with torn hinge and other damage.
The painted backdrop of this image bears a strong resemblance to the Antoine Claudet plate illustrated in Stefan Richter, "The Art of the Daguerreotype" (1989), pp. 34-5. It seems likely that both were colored by the same person.
A moderate mold spider can be detected in the area of child's belt, otherwise in excellent condition with good color, in applied shades of flesh tone, red, green blue, yellow and white, which has also been used to add an idyllic skyscape to the image.
