Early Niagara
SOLD April 2009 |
Early albumen print circa 1860s of a man viewing Niagara Falls, taken from the perspective of Platt Babbitt. Print size 6.75 x 9.25 inches (17x24 cm).
The photographer Platt Babbitt is associated with a particular, jealously guarded viewpoint on Niagara Falls from which he produced both daguerreotypes and ambrotypes -- the same viewpoint used in this early albumen print, which may well be Babbitt's work. Visible in the distance is Terrapin Point Tower, a Niagara landmark which was demolished in 1872.
