Ninth plate Neff's Patent melainotype of two squirrels eating nuts or grain. Housed in a full pressed-paper case with leather hinge.
With a greedy glint in their eyes, these squirrels hasten to attack the delicious nuggets which a friendly photographer has left out for them as bait.
This image is a Neff's patent melainotype -- the earliest form of tintype, which has an unvarnished surface and requires the housing of a case to prevent abrasion of its fragile surface. Underneath the mat the plate is stamped "NEFF PAT 19 FEB 56." The image is in fine condition, with tarnish around edges and some brown spotting on the left side.
