Lydia Benham on Her Way to Missouri
SOLD March 2008 |
Octagonal sixth plate daguerreotype of a beautiful woman, by C. H. Williamson, Brooklyn. Brass mat impressed "C.H. Williamson / Brooklyn NY." Housed in a half thermoplastic case and inscribed in case "July 8th 1860 / Lydia A. Benham [...followed by three other names all ending in "Phillips"] / This day our Lydia left Chicago on her way from New York to St. Joseph MO"
A striking "keepsake" daguerreotype which Lydia must have brought from New York to leave with her Chicago relations.
Some brushing can be found around the upper edges of image, which is not prominent under normal viewing. Case has chips and repairs.
