Quarter plate daguerreotype showing an artfully vignetted view of a man in profile. Anonymous American ca. 1850s. With extensive applied hand-coloring to sitter's face. Housed in a half case.   ( Inventory# ic447b )

A finely handled image with careful hand-coloring. While I believe the same pigment may have been used to color both the sitter's lips and skin tone, this coloring is so skillfully applied that it appears as red on lips and as a lighter flesh tone on the remainder of face.

Image is in superb condition, with tarnish at edges that mirrors the effect of the vignette.
