CDV-sized tintype of a young girl riding a mock studio horse in front of an elaborate painted backdrop, with a mock studio lawn beneath the hooves of the stead.
The horse in this image is of a strange composition that emphasizes its imaginary nature. The stead's head, for example, seems to be a different color and construction than the body, almost as if the head were part of the painted backdrop. Its front legs are lifted as if in a suspended gallop, a pose which also recalls that of the horses on a merry-go-round. Overall the effect of these elements is to create a dreamlike tableau, rather like paintings of Marc Chagall.
