Cabinet-card format sepia-tone photograph of four nurses from the Binghamton State Hospital (Insane Asylum) circa 1890s, by Gilmore, Binghamton. Card imprinted front "Gilmore / G / 80 Court St. Binghamton, N.Y." Reverse blank, with later inscription in pencil "Nurses / Bing. State Hospital / Emma / Olive / Anna / Bette".
Built in 1864, the earlier "Binghamton Asylum for the Chronic Insane" was renamed the "Binghamton State Hospital" in 1890. In 1892 a school of nursing opened there. The Hospital, by then renamed a "Psychiatric Center", remained in operation until closure of the building in 1993.
