Beauty in Bonnet
SOLD September 2012 |
Sixth plate daguerreotype of a very attractive young lady wearing a bonnet and holding flower bouquet. Anonymous American circa 1850. With applied color to sitter's face, bonnet, ribbons, and bouquet. Housed in a full red-leather pushbutton case with separated spine.
Despite a countrified, pastoral feeling to her garb and bouquet, the delicately beautiful sitter of this daguerreotype appears almost too finely made for the life situations encountered by many 19th-century Americans. Perhaps we would best place her in the pleasant pastoral countryside of long-settled New England.
Flowers on sitter's lap have been tinted with heavy applied color in red, green, and perhaps another color. Her bonnet, face and ribbons appear to be done in a light red or orangish peach color.
