Western Homestead
SOLD September 2012 |
Quarter plate ambrotype of a frontier homestead on edge of pine forest, anonymous American circa 1860. With coloring in green and brown. Housed in original geometric thermoplastic wall-frame (Berg 7-22) with restored bottom right corner. On reverse of the frame an old paper label reading "Birthplace of L. W. Holl[inbrook?]".
Although location is not indicated, this crisp image of what appears to be a dry landscape next to pine forest in reminiscent of many images of Gold Rush era California. The Scovills brass mat over image is impressed "Scovill MFG Co. Superior" and "Waterbury Conn. No. 842".
The label on reverse of frame is partially abraded but appears to read "Hollinbeck", "Hollenbeck," or some closely similar name.
