SOLD March 2013 |
Rare early view of Colorado pioneers by Charles Bohm, Denver, vintage albumen print circa 1870. Image mounted on fancy studio board with decorative gold bordering and imprint "Chas. Bohm, Denver, Col." Overall dimensions of board about 8 x 10 inches (20x25 cm). Print size 5.5 x 7.5 inches (14x19 cm).
Perhaps prospectors or miners, this crew clearly had rough edges and were happy to show it. The battered old man in front row looks to be wearing a brand-new set of "store clothes" which don't quite fit him, but his boots still show a layer of mud or dust.
Carl Mautz's "Biographies of Western Photographers" lists Bohm as operating alone in Denver 1870-72, then in partnership with Charles Perry from 1872-75.
