Alms for the Poor
SOLD March 2013 |
Roughly CDV-sized "begging" card with attached albumen print circa 1885, showing a collection of seven endearing Dickensonian waifs who would benefit from a stay at the "Sea-Side Home at Broadstairs For Children of the Poor", as advertised on card reverse.
The card was intended for use by filling in the boxes for each donation of one penny, making a total of ten shillings. It was originally probably full-height CDV in size -- however the extreme bottom of card has been trimmed.
The collection of ragged girls presented in the attached albumen print are personable and smiling, but do look somewhat unkempt, and genuinely needy.
