Steamboat Otetiani
SOLD April 2014 |
Sepia-tone cabinet-card format photograph of the steamboat OTETIANI, noted for its supposed encounter with the dreaded Sea Serpent of Seneca Lake. By F. M. Foster, Pulteney, New York, circa 1900.
Several period newspapers report detailed claims that the Otetiani rammed and killed a large sea serpent in Seneca Lake on July 14, 1899. Other, skeptical period sources suggest that those on board had been drinking before the encounter.
